I've had a copy of this for a while, but after reading [b:The Rowan|61938|The Rowan (The Tower and the Hive, #1)|Anne McCaffrey|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1316408956s/61938.jpg|1892324] last year, I was wary of getting into some more subservient-female mind traps, and have backed off reading McCaf...

Got to about 40% but I really struggled with it. The book just didn't hold my attention.

This reader's personal opinion, ©2012, all rights reserved, not to be quoted, clipped or used in any way by Google Play, amazon.com or other commercial booksellers* Actually one of the few series I re-read (first read probably in late 1970s). I loved this book as a kid and I love it again as an adult. If you read only the the first few chapters of this book, you might think that Anne McCaffrey was a sexist, having bought into the myth that men are greater than women, etc. But she is a clever writer and merely sets you up to show how our ...

I didn't enjoy Dragonflight nearly as much as I enjoyed the Harper Hall trilogy, but it was interesting to read the series' first book.

Loved it! I don't know what took me so long to read this one and I'm absolutely smashed about it. Can't wait to get my hands on the next book. The beginning was slightly strange to me - sounding a little bit more sci-fi but then the rest of the book has a fantasy feel (there's a fine line here for m...

I read a few Pern books in my teen, I thought they were readable but at the time I was not all that taken with them. At that age I was not too discerning, I cared nothing for characterization, dialogue or prose. I read only for fun and escapism, not for the artistry of the works. Well, I am way out ...

★★★✩✩ Okay. **deep sigh** There is an imaginative plot in this story. Comparing the date of publication to a popular 80’s movie Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , I found that AM had the solution to planet Pern’s “Threadfall” - a deadly organism raining down from the skies - problem first.Procreatio...

*Read the full review at Witchmag's Boekenplank* The first couple of pages I had to struggle to get into the story. There were a lot of words I didn’t get at first and the writing style felt different to me. Most of the words I didn’t get were made up ones. Although there was an index, which expla...

There is a lot of love out there for the Pern books, but I found them kind of slow going. The books are kind of reminiscent of the sort of planetary adventure stories that Edgar Rice Burroughs used to write but with romance elements added, and of course dragons.
