Not sure how I feel about the ending. Too many unanswered questions. Otherwise, this is a fast, slightly creepy MG read.

This book was slow from the start so it took a while to get to the good part. What I like most about this story is that it is the classic plot of the devil granting wish in return for something. There is always catch when asking for something. After moving away from the war, Max's family moves to a b...

Typical Zafon story elements in this book for younger readers. Still a compelling, but less complex storyline than his other novels. Quick read - less than 2 hours and a wrenching conclusion.

Great storytelling, very creepy, and a quick read. There are a few unanswered questions and the epilogue was corny. I would definitely suggest this to teens who want something scary, but not too crazy.

If I were going to compare the author of this book to anyone, I'd probably go with Stephen King fromPet Sematary or maybe Peter Straub from Shadowland. What we have here is a few young people fighting an ancient evil with almost no adult help. It's creepy in the best tradition of horror in an idyl...

This was Ruiz-Zafon's first novel, originally published in 1992, so don't expect the depth and genius of The Shadow of the Wind. Still, there are a lot of elements I think will a...

I wonder if it's because it's intended for a young adult audience or if it's because this was really his first book, written nearly twenty years ago, and Zafon just hadn't gotten his groove yet, but this book was somewhat disappointing. If I had read it when I was twelve, I think I would have loved ...

Sometimes Carlos Ruiz Zafon writes brilliant, amazing books (c.f. The Shadow of the Wind). Sometimes he wanders lost in beautiful writing and forgets that novels need coherent plots, too (c.f. The Angel’s Game). And apparently, sometimes he even lapses the beautiful writing. Not much; the majority o...

I hadn't realised until recently that this was his first book. Definitely edge of your seat suspense
