This must have been an edge-of-your-seater back when it came out. It looks a bit dated when held up to the light of the 21st century though. The writing is not stellar, but as pure adventure there are certain passages that still entertain.

I find that Jules Verne's books are of very varied quality. Fortunately this was one of the good ones, and I really enjoyed reading it. However, it is rather amusing to read about the technology he thinks will be available and how absurd some of his assumptions are - putting a bit of fantasy/sci-fi ...

"Submarine" really had a different meaning in 1869--it meant under water. It's impossible to envision what it was like to read this when it first was published.Really the only bit of suspense is in Antarctica. We in the 21st century are utterly jaded in that respect.It was O-K. Were I an engineer...
