Tony Hendra seems an unlikely author of a book on spiritual mentoring. A gifted satirist, he was an original editor of National Lampoon; the editor-in-chief of Spy magazine; performed frequently with Python-to-be John Cleese; and starred in This Is Spinal Tap. All those comedic credits, however, only make this story more personal and gripping. In 1955, Tony was a hormone-driven 14-year-old who had blundered into a relationship with a married Catholic woman. Caught in an illicit embrace, the teenage Hendra was whisked away for redemptive counseling by Father Joseph Warrilow, a gentle, wise Benedictine monk who believed that "the only sin is selfishness." Hendra's Father Joe is a tribute to the healing hand of this good man and, thus, a meditation on faith and friendship.
