Finders Keepers: A Novel by Stephen King | Summary & Analysis
This is a Summary & Analysis of Finders Keepers. Stephen King offers a gripping tale of a robbery and murder and what happens after – but that is not all. Along with a buried-treasure-found plot, it presents a metanarrative commentary on how to read well that can be a useful guide for King’s large audience, both lay and scholarly. It offers much to all of its readers, making it a valuable piece and an example of why King is one of the masters of contemporary fiction.
The novel follows the fate of the fortune and unpublished works of John Rothstein, an eminent and reclusive author. He is killed in the late 1970s by Morris Bellamy, his works and money buried only to be recovered decades later by Pete Saubers, a teenager in unfortunate circumstances who uses what he finds to improve his family’s lot in life. At length, Morris is released from prison – he was incarcerated on an unrelated offense – and seeks to recover what he hid years ago. Although he finds it in the end, it is truly at the end for him; he and the works burn away, leaving only memories, incomplete and partial, behind them.
