Well, color me green, and say I'm from Mars, because this is one of those books that leaves me feeling like an alien among other readers on this little blue planet. As in, even though I loved Jellicoe Road, the appeal of Finnikin of the Rock eludes me. It was sort of like an interminably long car rid...

Melina Marchetta is my hero(ine). I don't have anything to add, except to give Finnikin of the Rock another raving 5-star rating.

What a charming read! I wasn't so sure, going in, how well I would like this. There are few high fantasy novels that I truly love. While there are no elves, orcs, dragons, vampires, shifters or a dormouse to be found, this was just as great as other high fantasy novels. What is scarier to read? Abou...

Read for the first time from February 18 to 20, 2010.Up to the middle of the book I would have rated solid four stars, but then I noticed the characters had sort of attached themselves to my heart and the plot twisted and turned and I had to take the book with me on a seven-minutes-train-ride in ord...

This was pretty standard fare for a journey-type, classical fantasy. I saw most of the twists coming, but the story of the kingdom and the world-building was intriguing and compelling. There was a humor to the writing and dialogue that set it apart; I laughed out loud a couple times. I'm not really ...

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I rate Finnikin of the Rock two stars. This should have been a five star read. It's written by Melina Marchetta whose contemporary novels rank among my favorite YA books of all time, and it's fantasy which is my favorite genre. But alas, this turned ou...
