A pretty good anthology, with a wide cross-section of genres, albeit a little fantasy heavy (I actually see that as a good thing). I've seen a number of negative reviews for this particular collection, and I wonder if that's just a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that Martin's putting out a book othe...

I didn't read all of the stories in this volume, mostly because I ran out of time and had to return it to the library. What I did read was enjoyable, though. My favorites were the Jim Butcher, Diana Gabaldon and George RR Martin stories, since they're part of larger series that I'm reading and re...

A bit too uneven an anthology to recommend wholeheartedly. I probably liked Brandon Sanderson's story the most; Abercrombie, Abbott, Lindholm, and (to an extent) Cadigan were also quite palatable. A few others (Martin, Grossman, Spector, Butcher) are likely to fall flat unless you're already familia...

Nope; this story seemed like a jillion other westerns to me. Grimy desperado on the run at start and finish with some violence in between. Big whoop. I just really loathe most westerns. Not even going to rate this story. I really thought this collection was all fantasy and science fiction. What...

This is an anthology, where all the stories are focused around love and death. I know, extremely surprising, based on the title. I will write a tiny bit about each of the stories, and conclude with my general impression of the anthology as a whole.Love Hurts by Jim Butcher - 4 stars.See my write-up...

I'm a sucker for these UF anthologies. I always fish in and usually end up liking only a handful of the stories. Which was the case with this one. With some I'd never read the series they were based on, so when I got lost I gave up on the stories. Charlaine Harris' Dahlia story wasn't bad...prob...

George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois, neither of which are names I instantly associate with urban fantasy, edit this collection of short stories. Martin makes the claim in the introduction that Urban Fantasy is the bastard child of two genres: Noir and Horror. I can see his point, to a degree, and...

Okay, let's start with the overall final thoughts - some of the stories were really fun, some were really weak, and it's surprising how many of them didn't actually seem to have a "dangerous woman" in them unless you really squinted at the definition. I can't really rec the whole thing, but some of ...

Anthologies can be hit or miss for me. Often, they seem to be positioned as a way to introduce readers to series and authors. Now this is just my opinion, but too many times short stories aren’t as engaging and just don’t pull me in like a novel. The characters may not be as well introduced because ...

The Martin novella was a bit disappointing, but the overall quality of this anthology makes for a highly entertaining read. http://fedpeaches.blogspot.com/2014/01/worth-wait.html
