Hatchet is a very descriptive story that uses the senses to draw you in. I would use this book in 5th or 6th grade. I would have the students write about what they would include in a backpack and why.

This is an amazing book and I would recommend to every fifth grader. This book is especially great for boys. It's the type of novel that will create a passion for reading for most boys; which it actuality did for my little bother. This book would probably be better for later on in the school year fo...

Hatchet should be read in fifth grade and tells a story of a boy that fights alone through adversity and never gives up on what he needs to do to survive.

This is another book that I haven't read yet, but it is highly recommended for upper elementary school grades. The story about a young man and his fight for survival in the wilderness is another inspirational tale that will uplift students. I would use this book in a fourth grade classroom and I wou...

This is another book I chose for a potential book to read with my tutoring child. Gary Paulsen's books were popular when I was in school but I never read them. Hatchet tells the story of Brian, who is traveling to visit his father after his parents divorce. While traveling, the pilot has a heart att...

This is one of the 2 books my incoming 7th grader chose from his summer reading list. He did not much enjoy Hatchet (and neither did I), but the short length of this one still sold him. I read it after he did, per his request. And we both enjoyed this one much more than Hatchet. The boy found Hatc...

In June 1861, when the Civil War began, Charley Goddard enlisted in the First Minnesota Volunteers. He was 15. He didn't know what a "shooting war" meant or what he was fighting for. But he didn't want to miss out on a great adventure. The "shooting war" turned out to be the horror of combat and the ...

Dogs never lie or cheat, and their default setting is love. Some may seem grumpy, but all dogs have honor, humor, and dignity, and if you're really lucky and you pay attention, they will bring out those same characteristics in you. - Auhtor's Note The race was the most fun I've had all day. We sho...

What a fun book. But, then again, its hard to go wrong with Gary Paulson. I chose this book for my upcoming youth book club. And I'm very excited about it. A fun, heartwarming, hilarious short story that kids will easily fall in love with. Kevin has a gift. That gift is being the best liar ever. ...
