A sparkling little book. It tries to put a back story to explain how a picture came to be painted, which is one of the questions that is often prompted by a good picture. One assumes that there has to be at least a framework of facts in which the story is based, but they don't actually matter too mu...
Finished: Excellent writing. Each character was portrayed with depth. I kept thinking that I should quote this line or that, but this was impossible without giving spoilers. You must read the book to get into each of these characters and to submerge yourself into their lives. The book is not only a...
Enjoyed this novel very much: the historical detail was deftly done and convincing, and so was the characterization of Griet the maid, a tough little cookie who learned fast, and dealt well with her place in the world, even when that place was at the receiving end of downright antagonism. The painti...
I liked this story. It was an interesting take on what inspires us. I also enjoyed the almost-romantic-tension in the story, but prefer the way that it turned out. Sometimes that which we want is not that which is the best for us.
Inspired by the Vermeer painting, this historical novel might be a disappointment if one was hoping to learn about the life and motivations of the master painter. Imagined story of Vermeer's model. Vividly evocative of time and place. Outwardly, little happens in terms of plot, but really everything (and everyone) changes. Captivating, simple, but hidden depths. I'm glad I read it before the film came out - even though the film is good.
I read this book after my roommate at the time finished it and said "you have to read this!" I did, and loved it. I normally go for chick lit books, and was surprised that I couldn't stop reading it.
Lauren had this book for her English Festival, and I picked it up and read it in a day or so... Great Book!! Since I studied art, stories that fictionalize artists are fascinating.
