From the days when natives wintered at the mouths of these creeks, to the arrival of European settlers and the eventual building on their banks, the waters of both Acme and Yuba Creeks have nourished generations of human inhabitants. Even now, after the clearing of the primeval forest, the tilling of the soil and the insurgence of urban construction, one can still recognize the characteristic look of a cold Northern Michigan brook in the waters of Acme and Yuba Creeks. It has endured. Whether despite human activity or because of a human activity, Acme and Yuba Creeks remain a symbol of the quality of life than Northern Michiganians have come to treasure.
But how long will Acme and Yuba Creeks continue to run clean?
The fate of these creeks stands at an historic crossroads. The urban growth of the Traverse City area is already spreading into the creek basins, and with it, many of the practices that have converted so many running brooks into muddy ditches. But today, we have the tools and techniques at our disposal to change the habits of the past -- we can grow into the Acme and Yuba Creek Watersheds while at the same time protecting their water quality.
This publication explains how you, as a member of the Acme and Yuba Creek community, can contribute to the well being of these creeks, participate in the protection of these valuable water resources and, in the process, enhance the value of your property. Inside the book, you will read about the physical characteristics, history, and prognosis for the future of these important watersheds in Acme Township, and it will introduce you to a variety of tools at your disposal to protect the creeks' water quality: best management practices (listed in this handbook), voluntary land protection programs, stream buffers, and land use regulations.
