4.5 stars. There was something really odd about the first half of this book, something I can't quite place, and it's that something that lost this the half star. But this book was so good, especially the last few chapters, and I'm saddened that I don't have the next one readily available.
Joe Abercrombie just keeps getting better. While this tale differs in that the story is told through the point of view of a single protagonist, the witty dialogue, steamrolling conflict, plot twists, colorful characters, and surprises abound in the marvelous page turner.

It was a great book! The best part for me was, that even though it's YA, it's the kind of book that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages without complaints about the target age. I've never read anything else by this author, so I can't compare it to his other books, but Half a King wasn't too dark. ...
