I actually quite enjoyed this book, I liked how it often had the news report giving away little snippets of the shooting, it allowed to compare with how Valerie described the events. I was hoping to hear more about the hate list itself and her relationship with Nick... However I did still enjoy this...
I had a problem with this book, with the main character and with the plot. It all seemed too artificial to me and it was hard to feel something, anything. It wasn't bad, but I guess I'm tired of fist person pov and high school dramas. And it's all me, not the weakness of book or it's author.
I’ve been wanting to read this one for some time, and borrowed the e-book from the library (I’m on a roll with library books!). Here is the summary:Five months ago, Valerie Leftman’s boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saved the life...
I must admit, I had a hard time with this book at first. It was kind of slow-going, especially since recently I’ve been reading plot-driven books, and this definitely is not one of them. Once I got into the rhythm of reading a book that was more about character, it became an easy read and I read it ...
I really dreaded reading this book. I don't even live in a city where a shooting such as this (not even just school shootings, but even the shooting at the Batman premiere), but the idea of such a random brutal act of violence has always scared me. About a year after Columbine I had a nightmare that...
3.5 stars. After sitting on my thoughts for a day, I feel like I can't review this book with any sort of polished thought process, so I'm just going to let my fingers type out whatever comes to mind. I think this book probably deserves a 4 star plus rating because it is a story worth telling and a ...
Powerful subject, this. Yet, there’s still something lacking. Most of the people here felt totally black or white to me (save Valerie, though). Take the bullies, they’re beautiful and popular and disgustingly mean spirited. Take their victims, who’re all on the fringe. But more than that, what of h...
The writing in this book is amazing and well done. There are flashbacks, and it goes back and forth. We get when Valerie and Nick are in love, and they share their hate list. Then, fast forward to the present, and Valerie deals with the consequences of the hate list, memories, and tries to overcome ...
There are many books out there about school shootings. I think this one is unique and here is why. Most books talk about the shooters in detail and how they planned it, their lives etc. This one talks about the victims and how the school struggled to rebuild afterwards.A lot of blame was put towards ...
Like nothing I've ever read before, this book tugged at my heartstrings. I felt so sad for Val when she was reflecting on what the horrific event that happened. Then I was so excited for her when she grew into the young woman she always knew she was.
