I admit it: I'm not sure I "get" this book. I mean, I get it, in general terms, as in I understand what Conrad was going for with the metaphors and the symbolism and all, and the darkness and the darkness and the darkness... But understanding in concept isn't really the same thing. And in the intere...

I have to again bring this down to a three star review on the basis of enjoyment. I cannot doubt that this is a book - a novella to be precise - worthy of literary acclaim. However the story personally lost me about halfway through and I found myself floundering through, trying to understand what ha...

Many people seem to think that this story is just about racism, but that is missing the main point. It is true that much of Conrad's fiction seems racist in tone, but one must take that from whence it comes; he was writing at a time when European Colonialism, (and sadly racism too) was in full swing...

'I did not betray Mr Kurtz - it was ordered I should not betray him - it was written I should be loyal to the nightmare of my choice.'This book is literature: words made into art. I know this is supposed to be a classic but I didn't enjoy it at all. The only reason I read it was because I was forced to for a class. It was hard to get into and I found myself reading the same page over and over again.

I ended up sparknoting it because my English teacher expected us to read the entire thing between two classes. Based on that, I didn't think it sounded too great. I know this is a ridiculous claim to make without actually reading the book but I did read parts of it and just couldn't get attached.

Celebrity Death Match Review Tournament, Round 1: The Essential Calvin and Hobbes versus Heart of DarknessHeart of Darkness doesn't even bother to show up, but sends its kid sister, Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. Calvin and Hobbes laugh scornfully, but their jeers soon become screams...

Very powerful. I already want to keep going back and dipping in to odd pages. I shall have to look out for my own copy as this one is going back to the library. The odd thing is how contemporary it all sounds, I'm having trouble placing the book in 1899, and the introduction Joseph Conrad wrote in t...

They're on the river and nothing happens. Why do I feel I've read this before... oh wait, that was Huck Finn. Alas this one must suffer the same abandonment from me.
