This is a wonderful, wonderful book -- and it has made me a fan of Böll -- the writing is lovely, humane, a spirit of dignity... I found the ending somewhat less satisfying, as there were too many loose threads, and so the missing star. But this remains a wonderful read, and the discovery for me of ...

(I am currently reading Billiards at Half-Past Nine. I thought that Silent Angel was good, I guess, when I read it - because the topic was of interest to me. The story of a woman who through irresponsible reporting is dragged into...

In the short amount of time that they have, the stories pack a lot of punch and have some powerful imagery that probably wouldn't sustain itself in a ...

Never published during Boll's lifetime because it was considered too much of a downer, he made use of characters and other elements here in his later novels. I think those books were better works--I was just a little too aware of the symbolism in this novel and the sketchiness of the characters.

Draussen vor der Tür is a play, a powerful outcry of anger against the war and people who do not take responsibility for it and who would rather ignore anyone who comes home broken by it, like the main character of the play. The book also contains a number of very short stories and prose pieces, inc...
