Where could they be, his sandal shoes with the buckles on the side? The little boy loves his sandal shoes the best, but on this particular morning, they are nowhere to be seen. As the boy and his grandfather search for them, small but significant discoveries provide the little boy and listeners alike with opportunities to identify objects, name colors, and greet the shoes ("Hello, shoes!") when they finally turn up. Then and there, all by himself, the little boy puts them on. He even fastens the buckles! As they head for a nearby park, the grandfather joyously celebrates with an improvised song. Scaled to the interest and understanding of one- and two-year-olds, the language of the book speaks to them directly; its perceptive artwork warms the heart with a find portrayal of a special relationship.
