Not realizing this was illustrated by Gwen Millward (The Bog Baby). I wasn't expecting a great deal. The text is sweet and simple and nicely suited to reading aloud to preschoolers and early elementary students. But the illustrations are just to die for. So sweet, so cute, so wonderful. Cute premise but a couple of the other creatures the narrator didn't want to hug such as the skunk. Why couldn't he/she figure out a way for them, too, or leave them out for another book? Fair illustrations.
