I fell in love with this as an adult after hearing a Radio 4 dramatisation of it. It's a fabulous romance which has a memorable heroine, and is full of humour, warmth and eccentricity, and yet doesn't give way to a schmaltzy ending. Teenage girls should be forced to read it.
