IntroductionHere’s how it all started for me. I was young, ten years younger actually because my dog is now a healthy ten years old. Plus I was in a new relationship and getting a pet seemed like the logical next step. That was the thing to do, wasn’t it? First a pet and if you managed to keep that alive then you could discuss having kids. So we got the pet, a rescue puppy which is a mix between German Shepherd and Malamute at our most educated guess.I now know that both these breeds are big and hairy, but the size and the shedding alone isn’t why I had grown to hate this dog. The reason’s I had grown to hate him included his barking, and howling, the fact that he runs away and he jumps up on guests, and so much more.If any of this sounds like your pet then you’ve found the right book for you. Take it from one who has hated their dog, you are not alone. If you’re at the end of your leash and your thinking about an exit strategy then try these tricks first, and let’s see if we can’t get you loving your dog again. All The Reason’s I Hated My DogHere’s how bad my relationship with my dog had become. For one thing I no longer called him ‘my dog’ he was delegated to my partner, ‘your dog’ and I tried my best to wash my hands of the pet. Problem I that I am the stay at home parent and I was the one dealing with the barking and the running away on a daily basis.Being part Malamute my dog doesn’t just bark and howl but he does something which is a mixture of both, talking. And he can go for ten or fifteen minutes just having a chat to the birds or the neighbour (who, by the way, also hates him). Then there’s the chewing, we can’t let him into the house because even in his ripe old age he will chew things up – usually expensive things like my brand new boots. He jumps any fence, at any time of the day and without needing a reason. Then he dashes off to visit friends and family around town.He begs; if we’re trying to have a BBQ, he’s at our feet trying to steal food off our plates. He jumps up on people and hassles guests to no end.And to top all of this off there is no way I could take him for a walk because he would pull on the lead and try to tango with every other dog we’d meet.Does any of this sound familiar?Well let’s get into my tips and tricks for dealing with these problems then.
