Harlan Brogren recalled his dad using live tame ducks as decoys—
legal in those days. He would place a ring around its
neck and then lower the duck, or ducks, into the water.
One time when he was retrieving the ducks he couldn’t
catch one, so he shot it.

His dad was an avid and serious hunter and would make
every effort to retrieve any game. While hunting ducks on
Lake Wakonda, south of Willmar, he shot a beautiful greenhead
mallard that landed out in the lake, where the water
depth was over his waders, as well as his head. He didn’t have
a dog. This was when few hunters owned hunting dogs.
Not wanting to waste the duck, and despite the cold
weather and water, he stripped down. Wading out until the
water up to his neck, he started to swim. Reaching the duck,
it was difficult to swim with a duck in his hand. He put the
duck in his mouth, and swarm back.
