Seventeen-year-old Sahar has been in love with her best friend, Nasrin, since they were six. They’ve shared stolen kisses and romantic promises. But Iran is a dangerous place for two girls in love—Sahar and Nasrin could be beaten, imprisoned, even executed if their relationship came to light. So they carry on in secret—until Nasrin’s parents announce that they’ve arranged for her marriage. Nasrin tries to persuade Sahar that they can go on as they had before, only now with new comforts provided by the decent, well-to-do doctor Nasrin will marry. But Sahar dreams of loving Nasrin exclusively—and openly. Then Sahar discovers what seems like the perfect solution. In Iran, homosexuality may be a crime, but to be a man trapped in a woman’s body is seen as nature’s mistake, and sex reassignment is legal and accessible. As a man, Sahar could be the one to marry Nasrin. Sahar will never be able to love the one she wants in the body she wants to be loved in without risking her life. Is saving her love worth sacrificing her true self? For ages 14 and up, grades 9 and up.

It’s so sad, so real, so good in a terrific, heartbreaking way.I felt very uncomfortable with Sarah's plan of transitioning. It’s just so wrong and ignorant and wrong. It was heartbreaking to watch Nasrin want something so bad that she could not have. Her desire consumed her and yet it was unreachable to her. She is living the life that was expected of her, a life that is right and just and she’s miserable. She tells herself that it will be okay and that things wi...
„If You Could Be Mine“ ist ein weiteres Buch, das ich auf der Young Adult – Bestenliste des Rolling Stone entdeckte. Die Autorin Sara Farizan ist die Tochter iranischer Einwanderer, wurde allerdings in den USA geboren. Außerdem ist sie lesbisch. Normalerweise ist mir die sexuelle Orientierung von Au...
I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley for an honest review. If You Could Be Mine was a book I wanted to love and wanted to give five stars to but could not. The synopsis pulled me in - I looked forward to reading about Sahar and Nasrin's love for one another in the conte...
Sara Farizan's "If You Could Be Mine" is both an illuminating and frustrating read, if I'm reflecting upon the experience. No doubt in my mind it's a beautifully told story, and I found myself immersed in the brief read. But I'll admit my frustration came with the naivete of the characters and som...
