I think I should count reading this book as an accomplishment of sorts... like, it should have a special place in my CV and everything. It’s been four(ish) days since I’ve finished reading this book, four days which I’ve spent trying to put at least some of my impressions into words which would hopef...

My first thought was that I wanted to give this book a 4.5, which again made me want to stomp my feet and hold my breath over the fact that the rating scale is 1-5 and not 1-10. The more I let the book sink in, however, the more I felt it probably deserved a 5 (out of 5) anyway. At its heart, the bo...

Life-altering.Does for the English language and the definition of what it means to be an American what Citizen Kane did for cinema. Some of the most riveting two million words I've ever read. And probably the most hilarious 800 pages of footnotes I have ever read.I've never been the same, since.A frie...

Just gonna jump straight in with a thought-jangle…DFW’s thang was to try and acknowledge the messages he received every day, from pop culture, television, advertising and such, and I sometimes found the book dated in such a cute way. Compare James Joyce’s “God is a shout in the street” to Wallace’s ...

I completely believe this is a great book. But reading it, for me, meant I would have to study it to understand it instead of just reading. I know for better readers, that's probably not true. For me, I'm a good reader, but not that good. Each paragraph felt like I was solving a puzzle which is too ...

I loved his books of essays. I wanted to like this book; I wanted to finish it. It's supposed to be a funny and experimental commentary on culture and a grim view of the world- a dystopia set in the near future. Yeah, I got the humor and irony - but I needed a hatchet to get through all complicated ...

I can't believe I finished it! What amazing, funny and crazy book. I'll never see entertainment the same way again.

I sold my copy I have here in Louisville, still have a copy up at my shack in Michigan. But I doubt this book will ever be read all the way through by me. I already know the underworkings of a large tennis complex, been introduced to a few zany characters, but I just can't see where this novel is go...

What an incredible journey. I've never recommended a book to so many people before I had even finished it. I feel like I need a support group to get over the loss of finishing it! Highly recommend it.

Got through about a quarter of this (very long) book and gave up. Perhaps there is some brilliance later on, but the beginning was a disconnected, bewildering, and rather boring mess. You don't care or really understand any of the characters; there is no plot to speak of; the book jumps all over the...
