Buttermilk, oatcakes, bacon, cabbage, drisheen and soda bread come to mind as typical foods of Ireland; while tea, whiskey and stout stand out as typical Irish drinks.
There is, however, apart from these well known items, a much greater diversity of products that can be identified as characteristically Irish. Foods such as caraway cake, simnel cake, maize bread and marmalade, while not unique to the island, have over time been accepted into the native diet and sit well with more traditional items such as salted ling, spiced beef and Dingle mutton pie.
