Then Dave meets Tom, a strange boy who helps him rescue Cat. It isn't long before Cat introduces Dave to Mary, a wonderful girl from Coney Island. Slowly Dave comes to see the complexities in people's lives and to understand himself and his family a little better.

Although the writing is sloppy and the book is a bit dated, "It's Like This, Cat" can still strike an empathetic chord with a male audience.The book does talk about neutering animals, which was a big plus to me. It was hard for me to grok why this one got a Newbery. It's such a nothing story- I don't see much growth in the protagonist, I don't understand what the satellite characters bring to the table, and hoo-boy is it dated.
