This is an overview of various postcards depicting various fairy tales. Most of the postcards are drawn from his private collection. In edition to a brief overview of the history of the postcard as well as the history of fairy tale art on postcards, Zipes includes various tales, including a possible...
In 'The Tale of Tales' Princess Zosa is cursed to marry only Tadeo, the Prince of Round-Field, who is enchanted to sleep forever unless a woman fills a pitcher with tears in three days. Zosa falls alseep before the end of the third day and the remainder of the vessel is filled by a Moorish slave gir...
I liked the other volume better. I can't figure out if it is because I'm a woman or because it was simply better. However, there a few essays that are worth it, like the one about Jack and the Beanstalk. If you like Neil Gaiman and/or Jeff Vandermeer, you should know each has an essay in this.
Zipes is a reactionary idiot whose work contains enough glaring factual errors (sample quote: Harry Potter and his friends "study hard and attend all classes. They rarely break the rules of Hogwarts." In the words of whoever had this book before me, HAVE YOU READ THE BOOK?) and unnecessary pessimism...
Nutcracker and Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffman 3 STARSThis is the original Nutcracker story. Hoffman's tone is perfect: the mice are extremely sinister and creepy, and the build-up of suspense was well-done. However, the language drags at points, and it takes most of the story to reach the climat...
At 814 pages, this is quite the compendium. Jack Zipes is THE researcher of folk lore and fairy tales (after [a:C.G. Jung|38285|C.G. 2 stars for the last 1/3 of the book, no stars for the first 2/3.I think I would have liked this book more if I had skipped the introduction. I may have ended up seeing things that weren't really there. After reading the intro, I saw this book as nothing more then Barrie writing this story to get ov...
Back in August, I read Tiger Lily by Jody Lynn Anderson, a retelling of Peter Pan told by Tinker Bell's point of view. (Sounds awesome, right? :D) I was so impressed by this wonderful book that I just had to read the original story by J.M. Barrie. When I finally found it at a local bookstore I immed...
Zipes other work seem to be better this one. His use of culture at the end is mostly personal experience. Maybe because I just read Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture has ruined me for such facile observations, considering that Orenstein's ob...
