"While everyone else was teaching, I went to an unoccupied corner and started going over material I had learned that day. For the first time, I felt as if I might have a chance to actually be good at something. Like Godmother said, nothingness was the beginning of the universe."Charlie Wong is a twe...

It’s been many years since I was twenty-two, and I’m not ABC (American-born Chinese), and I’ve never had to choke down a traditional medicine brewed from the intimate body parts of strange animals to please a parent, but Charlie Wong is the kind of character it’s easy to relate to. Clumsy, imperfect...

This was a really quick read--it reads more like YA than adult fiction. Beautiful writing isn't really its strong point, but it is definitely effective and doesn't distract from the story. This is the semi-autobiographical story of a young Chinese girl who immigrates to New York with her mother to seek the American dream. It’s told in clear, straightforward prose with interesting observations, insights and flashes of humor. A memorable line: For years, I calculated whether or not some...

So I'm not really in a gushing mood and I'm going to keep this fairly short, but y'all should know how fantastic this book is. I rarely give out 5 star ratings, so that should be an indicator of how special I thought this book was. I see that many people I know have already read it, so you know what...

It was wonderful, EXTREMELY relate-able. I'm currently having issues there. Do all Chinese girls go through this? Because right now, I'm in a similar situation where I want to get out of. The author obviously gave a lot of thought to the ending of the book. It made me cry and depressed as hell.
