A little heartbreaker of a book. I checked this out of the library so I wouldn't have to weed it and discovered that it was already on my to-reads list here on Goodreads. I know myself so well.I didn't totally buy the motivations of Edwin, but I bought into the characters enough that I could overloo...

Wuff! I really wanted to love this book. I did smile a few times, but didn't find the stand out poems I expected and many of the poems just fell flat. Worse still, the Dunn poem that I pinned my hopes on was down right depressing. Not bad -- I don't think he could write a bad poem -- but bleak. Oh w...

Some of the stories are okay. A couple are good. An unusual preponderance struck me derivative, boring, and/or pretentious. It bothered me that the publisher tried to present this volume as doing something new and important when it is not. At all. "Reinterpreting" fairy tales as coming-of-age storie...

Fuuuuuuck, I've been almost buying this damn book for about seven years. Found for cheap at a little bookstore I wanted to support, so finally got it, and its sort-of-companion.

Several of them have appeared in various magazines and collections (some have appeared over a decade ago). This is okay, for this is the first time that they are all collected t...

One of the books I took on summer vacation and definitely the highlight. Superior stories in an astonishing range of circumstance. As I sat among the kitsch of our vacation rental, I was relieved to find that here's someone who gets it. The best work a book can do.

I read about half of it but didn't finish it. It's good, they're short stories, they're extremely well written, etc. There was just on real magic happening for me. Probably good for people who like Alice Munro, Grace Paley, things in the New Yorker.I still think this is the best title for a book eve...

Serendipity. I had gotten this out of the library just before the NBA announcement--don't recall why, except that Shepard is a writer touted by so many to me over the years, yet I've only read a story or two, here and there.I'm trying to divvy up my attention over three story collections (all while...
