There are not a lot of winks in Just Kids, no nods or quips, it is not self-deprecating or apologetic at all. Patti Smith writes one of the most outlandish coming-of-age stories I could imagine, from teaching college to the streets of New York to the Hotel Chelsea in about two years, then rising in ...

When I was young, I learned a song in school. It was a round with one simple line: Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, and the other gold. The memoir Just Kids focuses on the author Patti Smith's relationship with Robert Maplethorpe, who was to become one of America's most important a...

Towards the end of "Just Kids", Patti Smith says, in relation to how long it took her to write the story of her and Robert Mapplethorpe's friendship, that there were many stories she could tell, in many different ways, and in the end, this was the story she chose. It made me grateful to hear it, as ...

Early in their friendship Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe donned their bohemian finery--she her "beatnik sandals and ragged scarves" and Robert "love beads and sheepskin vest"--and went to spend an afternoon in Washington Square Park. As they walked toward the fountain an older couple took note ...

I love how this is a dual biography of sorts. Even though biography and autobiography should be regarded with a watchful eye because there are so many different ways truth can be manipulated, that didn't really preoccupy me while reading 'Just Kids'. In the epilogue, Patti Smith says that there are ...

I like it, [edit: No, actually, I didn't. It was OK, but I did not, in fact, like it] but it didn't rock my socks off the way I hoped it would. Maybe I came to it with the wrong perspective: I was expecting to get a better understanding of Robert Mapplethorpe, but...didn't. For someone who was so in...

I love Patti Smith's first three albums. I saw her live in the mid-1990s and was, I'm sad to report, a bit bored. I thought she was destined to be one of those artists who, whilst I have a special affection for her, are no longer relevant. A few weeks ago (Sept 2012) I saw Patti play live at the ...

I heard great things about this book but I found it a lot of work to get through. Sometimes the exposition was just so overwrought that it detracted so much from the events themselves.

When Patti Smith first moved to New York City she met Robert Mapplethorpe by happenstance. They were both 20 years old. Robert "saved" her from an unpleasant first date with science-fiction writer by pretending to be her boyfriend. After they began living together, each made vows to take care of ...

In no way am I saying this is great literature and masterfully written. She was masterly in telling her story however. A real page burner and very interesting, especially if you have a history of the times and places. But this is a mixed review. And I tell why here:http://mewlhouse.hubpages.com/t/2d...
