This is one of the worst books I have ever read. If it had not been chosen by my book club in Montclair, NJ, I would never have finished it.There are many reasons why I didn't like the book, but I will limit myself to only three.1. I knew little about Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe before rea...

Smith gives us an intimate and touching portrait of a friendship. Her love for Robert and her faith in his talent comes through on every page. The book also portrays the electrifying art and music scene in the grungy, raw New York of the late 60's. Whither the artists now?

Reviewed the audiobook for SHELF AWARENESSJust Kids, Patti Smith’'s memoir of her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe, which began with a random meeting in Brooklyn in 1967 and lasted until Mapplethorpe’s death from AIDS in 1989, won the 2010 National Book Award for nonfiction. One of those books I wish I loved more. There was just a bit too much namedropping and some kind of unwillingness to really immerse herself in the here and now that she was living. The tender relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe was really the best part, and the photos from Chelsea hotel!

Very easy to love this book. A story of my generation - it's heroes and mores. I still remember the first time I listened to the album Horses.

Wow! This was such a beautiful and wonderful story, only made more so by Smith's talent for writing. I swear, the love between Patti and Robert comes alive in the pages of this book. It did, however, depress me for two different reasons:1) The book starts out with Patti talking about the day Robert ...

I've known about the book for a long time, but was never really interested in reading it. Then a while ago I stumbled upon one of Patti's mesmerizing photos and I just knew I had to read it.I must be honest and say that besides "Because the night" (which is one of my all time favourite songs), I was...

Hi Ho, the artistic life.I had very divergent feelings about Just Kids, Patti Smith's National-Book-Award-winning memoir about her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe. There were times that I felt moved by the beauty of her writing, and others in which I found her to be nothing more than another sp...

Just Kids is an incredibly moving story about the relationship between poet/rock singer Patti Smith and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The love and support between these two persons flows through Patti's poetic words. While they lived in the tumultuous art scene of New York in the sixties and sev...

I saw Patti Smith in concert about 10 years ago and found her energy amazing, but haven't really dug into her oeuvre. This section of her life, her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe is interesting and covers an interesting bit of cultural history, but suffers from the things I don't like about ...
