At the end of every Murakami novel, I have a lingering awareness that stays with me for a few days. A type of suspicion about the world around me. Is this truly reality? What constitutes my reality? This book is slow and meandering. Murakami is not for the general reader. It's not the actual story an...

Now I know what Alice felt like after she fell down the rabbit hole. This was my first read of a Haruki Murakami novel but it won't be my last. There's a four word sentence in this book that neatly sums it up: "very different but interesting." I couldn't have said it better myself.I always like a sto...

Weird. Just weird. I understand the story line perfectly but my reaction is "WTF did I just read?". I can't say much about Haruki Murakami just yet. Let me read "Dance, Dance, Dance" first.

Start brilliantly,15 year old boy and a boy called Crow are preparing to run away from home.Somewhere along the way story gets philosophical, existentialist characteristics, with a significant and strong underlying story of sexual desires which again leans on ancient Greek tragedies. So there's juggl...

I think Murakami then wrote this book based upon where those pieces of paper fell, es...

Haruki Murakami is a fascinating and interesting writer and boy howdy is he preoccupied with his penis. I mean, his protagonist's penis. Penises in general. Every book of his I've read is penispenispenis. But boy can he write. Kafka on the Shore is "magical realism," which as the old joke goes, is "f...

Nearly 4 stars. I really enjoyed it but I'm not sure whether I can recommend it. Very well crafted and I didn't get bored at all - but I think it only works because the writing is so good, I'm still a bit ambivalent about the substance. However I'm definitely going to read his latest IQ84 so I guess...

I could tell you what this book is about (a 15 year old kid running away from home, and an old man, who can talk to cats, fulfilling his destiny) but, for the life of me, I can't tell you what it's REALLY about. The whole thing feels like a dream: it makes sense while you're in it, but 5 minutes aft...
