Karaoke, No Chokey is a crash course in learning things that world class singers know and do. It covers breathing, practicing songs, and it exposes some common myths. Some of the common myths include "singing from the diaphragm". Every doctor since the 1700s who knew anatomy also knew that the diaphragm is a muscle, which makes you inhale. I once had a friend who had a heat stroke and was left with a paralyzed diaphragm. He had to use his chest to inhale and his breathing was pitifully labored before he died a couple of years later. The diaphragm is essentially numb and it doesn't force your air out. The thing is, most peoples' singing problems are not breathing problems. Most people are doing things to force out notes and are risking injury to the delicate tissues of the vocal folds. With some simple exercises, a person can start to improve singing. With some simple practice technique, a person can sing better and be more confident and not choke from the fear of knowing that bad singing and embarrassment is imminent. This is a primer, a beginner's guide to singing karaoke better.
