1.5 starsThis book has been shown a lot of love by readers, I just happen to not feel the love. I did not feel any love towards the book or understand the "love" included in the book. This is supposed to be one of the greatest love stories yet I was left feeling very much the opposite. How did Kathe...

Marvellous book. One of those I almost wanted to start again as soon as I'd finished. Historical fiction exactly as it should be, takes real events and adds flesh to the bare facts (without bending history too much) to make an enthralling tale. It helps that this is one of the rare romantic happenin...

A classic that I read as a teen, and have loved ever since. The historical tale of the romance between John of Gaunt and his mistress, Katherine Swynford. Terrific writing, a heartbreaker of a story, and it all happened to book. Very much recommended.

Meticulously researched historical fiction about John of Gaunt (Duke of Lancaster) and his longtime mistress Katherine Swynford, whom he eventually marries.Seton has captured the times perfectly, from the excesses of the wealthy to the privations of the poor. I had been meaning to read this for years and I am afraid my expectations were too high.I know this is a classic love story, but I, unfortunately, did not 'feel the love'. When John and Katherine realized their love for each other, it happened so fast. I thought, "Really? Are you sure that's not jus...

Finished: The last 100 pages or so I was thinking - stop with the crap about the customs of medieval times and just let me know what is going to happen to the main characters! I cared about them very much. I ened up totally loving Katherine. She was real. She made tons of "wrong steps" in her life, ...

Solid, engaging historical fiction about the mistress of John of Gaunt who was the ancestress of the Tudors. Rich with period detail. The part that makes me knock the rating down is the horrible passage wherein Katherine becomes a guilt-ridden Christian who repudiates her own happiness. It was such ...
