Set in Russia during the 1917 Revolution, Enchantments is narrated by Masha, daughter of the infamous 'mad monk' Rasputin. While I was in college, I got to see the Nicholas and Alexandra Exhibition in Wilmington, DE that included, among other things, lots of jewels, a wealth of photos, and the blood-stained and bullet-riddled wall where the royal family was executed. January 2011: Every time I'm not reading this book, I always forget that Arthur Dimmesdale is not an asshole. What's up with that? April 2009: Much better than I thought it was going to be. It made me so incredibly angry.
I really felt this book could have been much more interesting given the crime. The writer was incredibly dry and matter of fact in her presentation of the case which left me in the cold about it.
The dynamic among family members is intricate and tragic and I could understand why/how the relationships went awry, but overall it's a yucky story. Her father was one sick puppy, and one wishes Ms. Harrison had found more strength, and sooner.
