Tom Henderson (a.k.a. King Dork, Chi-mo, Hender-fag, and Sheepie) is a typical American high school loser until he discovers the book, The Catcher in the Rye, that will change the world as he knows it. When Tom discovers his deceased father’s copy of the Salinger classic, he finds himself in the middle of several interlocking conspiracies and at least half a dozen mysteries involving dead people, naked people, fake people, ESP, blood, a secret code, guitars, monks, witchcraft, the Bible, girls, the Crusades, a devil head, and rock and roll. And it all looks like it’s just the tip of a very odd iceberg of clues that may very well unravel the puzzle of his father’s death and–oddly–reveal the secret to attracting semihot girls.Being in a band could possibly be the secret to the girl thing–but good luck finding a drummer who can count to four. From the Hardcover edition.

I feel like a lot of people don't like this book very much, but it is one of the few that actually has me laughing out loud. The plot is incredibly weak, sure, but I think this is a book that is more stylistic than plot-driven and I find that very refreshing.

What makes me mention junior high school is because I used to fantasize abou...

You had me at the title, Mr. Portman. The only complaint I have about this book is the very unfortunate subtext that a relatively annoying boy with few attractive or redeeming qualities could still somehow get sexual favors from attractive girls for doing... nothing of great importance. Seriously. T...

Fun characters, amusing high school hijinks, Holden Caulfield-inspired cynicism, and great dialogue, all wrapped around an irritating wannabe DaVinci Code mystery that drove me bonkers. It feels like it goes on forever and sort of peters out, but I enjoyed the characters and tone so much I still enj...
