9/2010: Same as it ever was. I sink into this book and luxuriate.2008: Re-read. Still dig it.The second book in the trilogy. Lush, rich, sensual, escapist. Layers of details, plots within plots. Perfect for taking one's mind away from one's worries.

Better the second time around. Each episodic moment - Phedre's bonking people again! Phedre's hobnobbing with Venetian royalty! Phedre's in prison! Phedre's kidnapped by pirates! etc etc etc - was about twenty percent too long, so the momentum of the overall plot would drag before slamming you back ...

I was almost scared to read this, because I was just sure it wouldn't be able to measure up to Kushiel's Dart. If I'd known how wrong I was, I wouldn't have waited two months to pick it up!
