This book made me start thinking about what fantasy is, what makes something a fantasy book. Is merely setting a book in a world that is not our own, in a vaguely medieval/monarchical setting enough? Do you need magic? Those elements of fantasy? Because at the beginning, I wasn't getting much fantas...

Despite fitting into the coming of age genre often seen in young adult fiction, this is a very adult book--in every way. I avoided this book at first although a friend raved about it. Prostitution in fiction is generally a deal breaker with me. I didn't expect to be entranced and sucked into a world...

The first half of this book was excellent. The second half dragged on and on. It's a long epic tale type book, lots of court intrigue, lots of ef'd up sex scenes--which was actually what I really enjoyed. But it just got repetitive at some points and I didn't really like the 'main' love interest for...

So, apparently I'm in the minority of neither loving nor hating this book. There were some problems, but overall it was pretty decent.I'm not a huge fan of the author's prose. The book could have probably lost considerable bulk without losing any of the atmosphere, intricacy, plot, or complexity...

So deep and layered, and so very many characters with complicated names. Usually doesn't make for a pleasant reading experience for me, but I made myself not get frustrated, pronounced the names the way that sounded right in my head ("Eula" instead of "Elua," "Shirazi" instead of...Melisande's last ...

I read this years ago my friend lent it to me while I was out of work for ten days with an injury. It had entirely to much flogging for my taste. Deanna doesn't think flogging is sexy. In fact from what I can recall none of the sex was sexy. Young girls getting the shit beat of them is not sexy to m...

I'm torn with this one, a quick read really for all it's over 1000 pages it's full of detail and interesting moments but a lot of it stretches my disbelief a little too far. An alternative historical Laurel K Hamilton with a bit more plot and detail.

***Added 12/28/11*** Just finished this for the 3rd time, in as many years. The world that Carey created has become like an old familiar friend to me. Her books, like comfort food. Which means of course, that I can no longer reliably give this an impartial or unbiased review. Yes it has flaws. ...
