I must be totally honest. I loved IM's book Atonement and looked out for more by the author. There were a couple of hits and misses, but this one was def. a miss in my book. I was really, really bored by it.
I did this, then this happened and then that. It's a "day in the life of" short story dragged out into novel length. Granted there's plenty packed into that day and it's admirably juggled by McEwan. Honestly I can't pinpoint it, but "Saturday" left me flat by the end. Clever enough, but not engaging...
Ian McEwan is the second writer I've read lately who seriously overwrites. What happened to the art of editing? _Saturday_ is a disturbing and intriguing book marred by pretentious descriptions and a pedantic ending that could have been shortened considerably. Why are publishing companies releasing ...
Ian McEwan never disappoints, and this novel is no exception. While I found the build up to the final third of the book carefully constructed, if sometimes seemingly a bit slow moving, all of this was to lend greater wait to the final moments of conflict in the novel. I took my time reading this a...
Henry Perowne is a busy 48-year-old London neurosurgeon. Saturday is a single day in his life. We peek in at every thought that crosses this fellow’s mind over the course and react with him to the events that occur (seeing a flaming plane cross the London sky, getting mugged by a trio of toughs, los...
Warning: also contains major spoilers for Night TrainMany of the other reviewers say they're annoyed with Saturday on the grounds that the main character's life is too implausibly perfect - a successful neurosurgeon with a beautiful wife, two talented children, a lovely home, etc etc. He's even a pr...
I just did not particularly like this book. Much of what happened seemed preposterous. Very little plot, mostly the main character's introspective musings. On the other hand, some of the writing is quite nice and there are several descriptions of things he sees, or thinks he sees, that are worth re...
This was my first McEwan. I don't know what lead me to like it to be honest it has the recipe for being the most boring book in the world which isn't much of a recommendation I'm sure.I guess in part I am glad I read this one first rather then Atonement otherwise I think I would have come out of tha...
Books about men going through mid life crises or growing old have never really appealed to me. And I think it was even more so when I read this. Maybe I should read it again in a few years and see how I feel about it then because I do love McEwan's writing.
