When Carulli at the age of 62 created a monument to the Marseillaise by modeling the popular theme into four variations in his Op. 330, as a performing concert guitarist he was far from the brilliant touch he had been known for at the pinnacle of his career. Yet through its realization and content the work tells about the lifelong experience of an exceptional musician, who as a self taught performer and composer had become a celebrated virtuoso playing an instrument, that was in these days making its debut as a “soloist” in the concert halls – a development that Carulli had a significant influence in. Not only, but also because of the popularity of the theme the present work lends itself as an ideal complement to any classical concert performance.
