Renowned for its remote mountain beauty, Ladakh is a region in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir that extends from the Kunlun mountain range to the Great Himalayan ranges in the South. It is one of the most sparsely populated as well as the largest regions in Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from the marvellous misty mountains and the rocky ranges, Ladakh is known for its unique culture and history, closely related to that of Tibet.Having a vast array of Stupas, Monasteries and Buddhist temples; the roadways and towns in Ladakh are also laden with Prayer flags all over. From the high mountain passes to the Hill-top Gompas; from important tourist destinations, to the steel-truss bridges over the rivers; these prayer flags fluttering in the winds of Ladakh, add a bit of colour as well as spiritual good-luck to the entire area. Apart from these, you can also find prayer wheels spread across the town which can be constantly seen given a spun (clockwise) by the local residents and passers-by, for a little bit of extra Tibetan culture and good-luck prayer. On one side are the local residents of Ladakh which are spread roughly halfway between the Shia Muslims and the Tibetan Buddhists. On the other side are the tourists that visit this incredible place, who are an equally important part of Ladakh. Tourists were one of the main reasons for the requirement of roads in Ladakh (the other one being the Indian Army!) The entire roadstretch of Ladakh can be seen laden with predominantly two types of vehicles: one, the army trucks; and two, the bikes and ‘Royal Enfields’ of countless travellers visiting this enchanted land. This book takes a photographic tour of some of the most picturesque landscapes and structures in Ladakh, and tries to encapture it in limited frames of the camera. It tries to capture a week long journey through different parts of Ladakh, exploring the beauty of the landscape, the weather and the built forms that sparsely cropped up every once and again. This series of 2 books on Ladakh, is amongst the first of many such photographic journeys through the vast beautiful lands of India; and Ladakh definitely forms the best place to start such an incredible journey, being one of the most picturesque places in India.
