Nice to read a book about someone getting over boozing without endless American TV-style pompous moralising, for it to be a part of the plot but not all of it. James has engaging secondary characters and I'm sad there won't be more of Miss Pythian-James or Gabriel Spencer. Loretta Hawes deserves her...
