Swedish author Lindqvist’s first novel tells the story of Oskar, a smart but frustrated twelve-year-old boy who by virtue of having become the class bullies’ favorite target finds himself all but ostracized from his peers. That is, until a new girl about his own age moves into the next apartment, a ...

This is not really my genre of choice and the story was dark, disturbing and, at times, graphically violent but I still found it very compelling and was impressed at how the author was able to make me care about various less than savory characters.

Don’t turn away from this book because you have a profound distaste for vampire stories because this isn’t your run of the mill kind of thing. This is a story about loneliness friendship, love and loyalty. It’s set in the Stockholm suburbs late 1950’s. Oskar is a boy who lives with his mother, a ha...

I have never had the compulsion to read a book after I have seen the movie adaptation but this is exactly what happened here. My days of reading Anne Rice novels have long passed so I am not a fan of the vampire genre anymore however this is not your typical horror/vampire story and DEFINITELY not ...

I've thought some more about how to review this book, and I somehow feel that I should give it more stars, but I'm still unsure. Because it falls in that category of novels that leaves me "I liked it a lot, but..." (and though the 'buts' aren't so easy to explain, they still remain). In terms of how ...

This review was first posted on Music, Books and TeaI’m going to start off this review by saying that this is hands down, one of the single most disturbing things I have ever read. Ever. Not scary, although it is creepy in some places. Nope. This book is just all kinds of messed-up wrong. Yet it’s c...

Why did I read it? Because I caught parts of the Swedish film version and thought it a beautiful story and presentation. It helped it was available on audio. I am not a fan of vampire stories, but this one was intriguing; the supernatural element was not the focus. What is it about? Oskar is a ...

An interesting approach to the vampire mythos - at least none of them sparkle. Attempting to address a lot of the darker themes around vampirism and with strong themes around paedophilia - how else does a 200+ year old vampire trapped in a 12 year old's body get looked after on their own? The story ...

This is another one of those books I've come to that's been preceded by a fair degree of hype (no doubt in part induced by it's movie adaptation) and largely I would say this book didn't disappoint. These days it must be quite hard to write a vampire story that will stand out from the rest, that will...
