Today I was tired of all the reading I haven't been doing so I picked this book from my shelf and read it in one sitting. It's very short and not a difficult read though it covers some difficult topics. I didn't find the writing as beautiful as Hesse's other books but that makes sense for an epist...
I remember reading this when I was about eight and being really disgusted by the ringworm - I had no idea it wasn't a gross crawly bug.
Through letters to a beloved cousin a young girl documents her family's escape from Russia to the United States. Rifka shows great hope for the future and compassion for others as she makes her way through frightening situations. Story is based on the immigration of the author's Aunt Lucy.
