A cute story.Very simple text with interesting illustrations. I liked that there were multiple things going on plot-wise, which rounded out the work. I will definitely check out the sequel.

So many books really play to the expected gender roles of young boys and girls, with pretty clear divisions by color, hobbies, accessories, etc. This book gives us a heroine who is out saving folks dressed all in black like Zorro, but, also, says that the pink isn't automatically bad just because it...

Who said princesses can't wear black?*Who said princesses can't fight monsters?**Who said princesses can't befriend goat boys?** All questions aside, this is a very cute book with charming illustrations that I would have adored as a wee lass. You really quite quite beat a spunky princess defying all...

A bit sad that my book got in a bit damaged. :( I don't know what they did there where I bought it, but there are big, deep folds in some of the pages and the bookwrapper is also a bit dented/folded. Come on people, I buy the book from your place, make sure it gets to my place in one piece. Now for t...

Mr. Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown: I like Peter Brown’s books a lot, and his new one has a nice storyline that has a message without feeling too preachy. I also liked the artwork, which seemed a little Klassen-y (I mean that in the best way). Ike’s Incredible Ink by Brianne Farley: A story of cre...

I wanted to read the 2013 installment in this series, but this digital copy of the 2009 book was available at the library for my Kobo. I expect the series is consistent, so I'll go with this one for now. The three best things about this book: 1. Look doesn't 'cure' Alvin of his phobias; 2. She never...

The illustrator of A Stick Is an Excellent Thing, LeUyen Pham, also illustrated Desmond Tutu's excellent picture book [b:God's Dream|4473555|God's Dream|Desmond Tutu|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320497857s/4473555.jpg|16349153]. She's a rock star! In the end, it was the illustrations I enjoyed most...

I can't stress enough the importance of Archbishop Tutu as a world figure. I had the privilege during divinity school of spending three months living and working with Burundian and Congolese refugees in inner city Cape Town, South Africa. Bishop Peter Storey, former General Secretary of the South A...

Picked up mainly for LeUyen Pham's illustrations. It's very sweet, but I don't know that the story is one that will particularly resonate or stick with kids.

Another very good collaboration between a poet and illustrator. The illustrations are complementary. I do think, however, that having the illustrations makes it SO hard to think about trying to memorize the poem. It makes it belong in the book, and to me the key thing about poetry is getting it unbo...
