When I was a kid I really enjoyed playing video games. I remember when my dad gave me my first video game system, I enjoyed immersing myself into the stories of the characters. The games that I enjoyed most were the fantasy role-playing games. I enjoyed starting a character off on his quest with nothing more than a wooden sword and his wits and then over time leveling up and growing into becoming a mighty warrior; or taking a boy with one weak pocket monster and making him into a master. I enjoyed growing, becoming more than I was before. Now that I am an adult and deal a lot with people and the issues that they face in their lives, I have seen that most people are not “leveling up”. A majority of people stick around the first level in their lives, holding their wooden swords, wondering why they are not advancing or doing better than they thought they would. Additionally, these “first level” people see others who are advancing, and making names for themselves, and they begin to worry why that advancement is not happening to them. There would be times when I blamed my games when I would get stuck: maybe it was a maze that I did not know how to navigate or an item that I simply couldn’t find. After a good long time of trying, I’d fire up the ol’ computer and look up the cheat sheet, or the walkthrough. A walkthrough is a step by step instruction manual on how to get through the game. After reading the walkthrough, I would then know what to do next and I would move on and eventually level up. In life, not only are a lot of people in the first level, but they don’t even know how to advance or level up. They are lost and do not know where to go. As I counsel people, I notice a trend that many settle with mediocrity whereas, if they would change a few simple things in their lives they could be excellent. That is what this book is about. It is a walkthrough for your life. Admittedly, many of these lessons and tips are pretty obvious or should be common sense, yet they are still tips that many people do not take because either they do not know to or they refuse to. I hope this book helps you to get to the next level. What is “Leveling Up”?The last thing we ought to do before we get started on our quest to level up is to define what leveling up actually is. In simple words, leveling up is achieving a meaningful life. I believe that, when it is all said and done, meaningfulness is what we all ought to strive for in life. I have met many people with a lot of money who never found meaningfulness in their lives, in my opinion, those people did not live successfully. A lot of people come to a time in their lives when they look back and ask themselves a pretty simple question, “Did I make an impact on the world? Did I make a difference?” The goal is not more money, more friends, or more influence, even though those things may be a byproduct of leveling up, leveling up is achieving meaningfulness. To be able to look back and say, “My life meant something!” Let’s get started! This book gives advice on how you can level up in four areas: Relationally (building relationships), Professionally (succeeding at work), Physically (being healthy), and Emotionally (being peaceful/happy).
