On the younger end of 'young adult', but fun. Alek took a little while to grow on me, but Deryn is competent, bold, and awesome from start to finish. I also loved Dr. Barlow's cleverness.ETA: After reading the rest of the trilogy, I have to say pushing through this one was utterly worth it.

I absolutely loved this book. The characters are fully formed, popping off the page, or CD in my case, and continue to evolve throughout the book. The world is full of life, history, and culture. The setting of the very beginning of WWI gives the reader a starting point, but this tale doesn’t simply...

3.5 starsI'm torn about how to rate this book. On one hand it the vivid & complex world created was awesome. Very unique creatures that were brought to life even more by the illustrations provided. Unfortunately I think this was also the downfall of the story. So much time was taken to build, de...

Very imaginative and readable. Great voice for the individual characters and a unique take on historical fantasy. Great read! I'm looking forward to the remainder of the books which are already on my TBR list.

4.5 stars, but I really had fun with this one, especially after coming off another book that rather disappointed me. I thought the world was a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed the characters. Deryn and Alek both seemed a bit young at times for their actual ages, but I liked them so much that I was...

Leviathan is no great feat of literature and definitely falls on the younger end of the YA spectrum, but it was a fun adventure none the less.I thought the alternate-history was well crafted and adored the imaginative ideas behind the Darwinist's fabricated animals, especially the Leviathan which is...

(refers to audiobook)From time to time I do enjoy a "young adult" listen (particularly the excellent City of Ember series, as well as His Dark Materials) but generally I don't expect too much in terms of story, setting, and character. Here is another fine exception to that expectation. "Leviathan" w...

I really enjoyed this and I'm glad it was the first steam punk book I got to read! I loved all the different vehicles and airships throughout the book. I just had a few problems with one of the main characters, as she was super annoying, and I also thought the ending was a BUZZKILL. Other than that ...
