This was a sweet story, occasionally I felt a little old for it but as the story unfolded it just caught me. I have no idea how I put it onto my wishlist or who recommended it to me, but I'm glad I found it.The story unfolds as Georges (the S is silent as he's named after his parent's favourite Art...
This is a short, quick, adolescent book. The tone was good, something about it reminded me of Judy Blume's Fudge and Superfudge. Georges is simultaneously playing two games of pretend without actually admitting that he is playing either (although he probably doesn't realize what he is doing with t...
I enjoyed this story, perhaps identifying with the main character too much. When the bullying came out and his dad offered to solve the problem, he had the guts to try his own solution, and that rocked. Then we find out what was really going on the whole time and the situation threw me out of the st...
Or maybe 3.5 stars. I did like it - Stead has a readable, funny style that's appealing, and her characters are quirky and real. I liked how she addressed bullying, and the loneliness that comes from feeling different and having parents who are often absent. But it sometimes felt slow to me. While the...
While I liked this, I did not have nearly the emotional connection/reaction to it that I did to When You Reach Me. It may be because I saw the big twist coming quite early; it may simply be that it wasn't the right book for me at the right time.
I am not as over the moon about this one as my friends all seem to be, in fact, I didn't like it very much at all. It took me fully 3/4 of the book to become even modestly engaged with the characters. I get the messages, I liked the writing, but it struck me as, well, as boring as The Westing Game. ...
4.5/5 StarsRebecca Stead's MG book Liar & Spy is one of those books that I went into expecting one thing and got something completely different; which, in this case, is a very good thing. What I got was an utterly charming read with surprising poignancy.Middle-schooler Georges (the s is silent) has ...
Originally reviewed here. Why I Read It: I really enjoyed Rebecca Stead's sophomore novel When You Reach Me, which I read last year. As soon as this was released I sign it out of the bookstore I work at. Spoiler-free review ahead. This book has quite a few similarities to When You Reach Me: we have an...
