Hoo, boy.Where do I start?Actually, that's easy. Any review of Longbourn should feature this warning right at the top: If you are an Austen purist, this book will give you a stroke and a heart attack and possibly cancer. So there's that.Oh, also: Any novel written by a non-servant is apparently requ...

The book has been billed as the sequel to Pride and Prejudice, and so the saga of the Bennett family continues. However, the novel, Longbourn, really can stand on its own. It is a story that takes place during the Victorian Age, an era in which the divide between the servant and the master was unbri...

Oh dear, I should have listened to myself when I vowed not to read novels with Jane Austen's characters in them, it only leads to disappointment. I love Pride and Prejudice and the characters in it are very dear to me. I was hoping that this novel would finally be the one to do justice to Austen's c...

I honestly think this book would have been better if it didn’t have any connection to P&P. It might ...

Dirty linen might seem like a unsavory topic in a novel set in Regency England, but when the linen belongs to the Bennet family from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, it makes for good reading. Jo Baker's Longbourn is told from the perspective of the downstairs staff: two house maids, the housekeep...

Review first published on my blog: http://memoriesfrombooks.blogspot.com/2014/01/longbourn.htmlLongbourn is the home of the Bennett family from Pride and Prejudice. This is the story of the home help in that household - the housekeeper, the maids, and the footman.I have several reasons why I did no...

I was intrigued to read this: a retelling of Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of a housemaid. Fanfiction doesn't appeal to me (no matter what my glowing review of Fangirl may have led you to believe); seeing beloved characters reimagined by someone other than the author who made me love them...
