This book seems to split opinions, with lots of both 5 star and 1 star reviews. I'm being harsh and giving it 4 stars. If you didn't like it what's wrong with you? No really, if you found the writing boring, or Emma annoying, I think you have a problem and we should probably not be friends. (I found...

I hadn't really intended to read this, I was just killing time waiting for my flight and it happened! Good thing it did. What a tale this one was. The name alone gave me no reason to get excited, but it's a wonderful, saucy story in which I felt sorry for her husband in the end. She's such a cow- an...

There are two kinds of poor writer smugflourishes that I don’t like:1. The aimless simile. “Life is like a cat. You’ve got two of them and it has fur on the outside! The novels centers on the heroine's disillusionment at not having a higher status in society and being trapped in an unsophisticated provincial town. Emma Bovary rebels but never strives to separate herself from socie...

This is the new Lydia Davis translation, and is superb. I listened to the book (via audible). It's always perilous to comment on a book without reading it in the original. There are places where Bovary seems a bit melodramatic and where it shows its age. Yet Flaubert was undoubtedly a master of psych...
