In Sally Gardner’s stunning novel, set in a ruthless regime, an unlikely teenager risks all to expose the truth about a heralded moon landing. What if the football hadn’t gone over the wall. On the other side of the wall there is a dark secret. And the devil. And the Moon Man. And the Motherland doesn’t want anyone to know. But Standish Treadwell — who has different-colored eyes, who can’t read, can’t write, Standish Treadwell isn’t bright — sees things differently than the rest of the "train-track thinkers." So when Standish and his only friend and neighbor, Hector, make their way to the other side of the wall, they see what the Motherland has been hiding. And it’s big...One hundred very short chapters, told in an utterly original first-person voice, propel readers through a narrative that is by turns gripping and darkly humorous, bleak and chilling, tender and transporting.

This book. This tiny, amazing, horrific book. It's difficult to get my thoughts in order. On page four, I fell in love with the voice. I was absolutely involved with the protagonist and his story. Maggot Moon is definitely written with a less-is-more approach in mind, and it really works. The MC, Stan...

3.0 Not quite over the Moon
I picked up Maggot Moon because I was interested in reading a book with a dyslexic MC. The book is well-written, I just think that I've read many other stories with this type of "historical twist" which worked better for me.

3.0 Maggot Moon- not at all what I expected
Maggot Moon is a weird adventure and I had a bit of trouble keeping up with all the activity in the book, as it seemed that the jargon that Standish was using just didn’t click with me. The Motherland, the leather-coat man, the Greenflies just didn’t fit for me as I realized that I was trying to rea...

Wanted to read this for a long time, didn't get around to it until today, couple days after the Printz nod. Ever have those characters you fall in love with? Standish Treadwell is one of those. This story, wow. So unique. I sat down with this and didn't move until I'd finished. Definitely a one-sitt...

I’ll be quite honest–I mostly read this one because it’s on the Printz Blog’s longlist. While I normally like after-the-war stories, something about this one turned me off. I think it’s partly that the contrast between the setting and the Technicolor land is too great–1950s-60s America was not all C...
