I demand higher quality on both the characters and the story in order to give a higher rating. Maisie Dobbs was mostly annoying and a very boring character and the story was very bland.I liked the eneding, but probably not enought to want to read more books about Miss Dobbs.

more like 3.5 but rounding up - review to follow...liked the story for the most part - audiobook narration left a lot to be desired

An engaging mystery, excellent character development, and depiction of a place and time. Read Proud Tower by Tuchman, and then see if this book and the follow-on books of the series don't help to fill out the sense of the times being filled in for you.

I feel in love with Maisie Dobbs’ character right away. The author does an incredible job showing what Maisie’s like by starting with a stranger’s initial impression of her. She immediately comes across as capable, confident but down-to-earth, and very striking. As we go on and get more of her histo...

I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't stay very interested. Maisie, in the end, was just too perfect to be likeable, and there were no real villians at all. Even the Major turned out to be just a man driven mad by the damands of the war, and his henchman similarly twisted and confus...

Not your average mystery... Maisie Dobbs isn't your average detective, either. She's part psychologist, part detective, and part healer. This is a tough book to categorize. It's also a tough book to read...I was unsure about the structure of the book. It isn't unheard of to jump between time periods...

Really uncommonly lovely historical mystery. Not a typical mystery because much of the book is spent introducing Maisie Dobbs. It moves backwards and forwards in time starting in Maisie's present (~late 1920s)where she is just setting up in business as a private investigator/psychologist. Her fir...

A former nurse in WWI turns detective. I liked it and found the characters compelling, but was bothered by a touch of modernity at times. I know that after the war was when all kinds of things changed, but I wasn’t quite convinced by the period-ness of it. [Nov. 2011]

Maisie Dobbs is a young woman in post-WWI England who has opened a detective agency. The story begins with her meeting with a new client, who wants to know if his wife is having an affair. This is where Maisie is a little different from your average detective. Before taking on the case, she requires...
