I'm not a terrific fan of Campion, but I am partial to this particular scenario: The return to civilian life after WWI or WWII. And it doesn't hurt that when I think back on these (it's been years since I read them), I now picture one of my favorite actors (Peter Davison) in the role.

Poor Albert Campion has his first leave in four years and gets sucked into an investigation of murder / art looting. I was pleased to see that for once the American character wasn't a backwoods yokel or a vulgar buffoon. I found Amanda Fitton supremely annoying in Sweet Danger, so I was surprisingly...

The first Albert Campion mystery features Campion in a rather minor role. He is one of a number of guests at a weekend house party at Black Dudley manor. As mystery aficionados might expect, there is a murder, but the murder pales next to the much larger crime that will endanger all of the house res...

This is one of those not-actually-mysterious mysteries where the identity of the culprit is clear quite early on, to the detective as well as the reader, and the remainder of the story is the protagonist attempting to collect proof. Sometimes this works fine, especially if it is handled in a suspens...

Ms. Allingham, you can't just slap some Ruritanian Romance into your mystery. It does not work, just like the Holy Grail stand-in, tower-of-mystery trappings in [b:Look to the Lady|383189|Look to the Lady (Albert Campion Mystery #3)|Margery Allingham|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348706971s/383189.j...

This is the first book in the series to not have organized crime as a plot element. Like all the other Campion books it is set an old family home with an upper-crust cast (Allingham comes near to breaking the fourth wall when she makes her police officer comment on the improbability of this given ho...

First of a couple of Campion novels written after Allingham's death by her husband, Youngman Carter. This is primarily a cold-war espionage novel with aspects of mystery. Not a bad story, and we get to see a little of Campion's son Rupert as an adult. Definitely not a place for a reader to start,...
